Waitrose introduces highest standard supermarket British wagyu beef to growing No.1 range

Waitrose introduces highest standard supermarket British wagyu beef to growing No.1 range.

  • Five wagyu beef products launching on 18th September including Meatballs, a Sirloin Steak and Beef Burgers
  • All wagyu will have a higher marbling score than any other supermarket, displayed on pack for customers
  • From cattle sired by registered pedigree wagyu bulls

Wagyu beef originates from Japan and is famous for being the most flavourful, melt-in-the-mouth speciality beef on the market. Making it more accessible for customers, Waitrose is launching five own-label British wagyu beef products as part of the growing No.1 range.

Wagyu is graded on the Beef Marbling Scale, which is recognised globally as the gold standard for wagyu beef - this score determines the quality of the beef. The marbling score is assigned on a scale from 0 to 9, with a higher number providing a more tender, flavourful, and luxurious experience.

All Waitrose wagyu beef is graded a minimum of 6 on the BMS - the highest of any supermarket. This is the optimum level to ensure our customers are getting the best quality wagyu at home for a fraction of the price served in restaurants. This rating will be displayed on every pack, so customers can know exactly what to expect from our wagyu beef.

WR Wagyu Score

Tina Edwards, Wagyu Beef Product Developer, said: “It's no secret that wagyu beef is in higher demand than ever before - with searches for wagyu burgers up more than 100% on Waitrose.com compared to the same time last year. It was really important for us to deliver not only a great tasting product for our customers but to deliver on our high-welfare standards that we are so proud of as a brand.

“I’m thrilled to be introducing the highest supermarket graded wagyu to shelves and with five new products to choose from, our customers will be able to enjoy top quality wagyu at home, in a number of recipes.”

Customers will be able to choose from three new steaks including ribeye, sirloin and rump, as well as juicy meatballs to elevate their everyday recipes and beef burgers to take their fakeaways to the next level. Recipe inspiration can be found on Waitrose.com, including the recipe for wagyu steaks with chilli & chive butter and frites.

All Waitrose wagyu comes from cattle sired by registered pedigree wagyu bulls and is reared alongside our standard British beef products to ensure the same high-welfare standards.
