Waitrose welcomes its first crop of sunflowers

Waitrose welcomes its first crop of sunflowers, as summer finally makes a show.

  • Despite the late start to summer, Waitrose’s sunflowers are in full bloom with Sunflowers (£5) and Sunflower Abundance (£8) bunches now available in shops
  • Last year Waitrose sold over 1.5 million stems of sunflowers which are grown in Lincolnshire and picked by hand
  • Sunflowers are in the top five best selling flowers of the summer at Waitrose

It might have been a soggy start to the summer but Waitrose is bringing its own burst of sunshine to customers’ trolleys with its beautiful sunflower bouquets.

Customers can brighten their homes with Waitrose’s Sunflower (£5) and Sunflower Abundance (£8) bunches, which are in stores now, with all of the stems grown by our suppliers in Lincolnshire and picked by hand.

“It feels like summer has been a long time coming this year and, like us, our sunflowers have been waiting for the sun to shine. Sunflowers are in our top five most popular flowers of the summer at Waitrose so we’re delighted to have them back on our shelves now the sun has finally made an appearance!” says Nicola Wall, Waitrose Flower Buyer. “With their joyful, bright-yellow petals, a bunch of sunflowers are an ideal way to bring a bit of sunshine home, and they make for a lovely, cheerful gift too.”

Sunflowers take 12 weeks from when they are first planted, to when they are ready to pick, and the sunflower season lasts until the end of September.

To look after your sunflowers, remove the leaves and cut a small section off the stem. Add flower food from your bouquet and change the water regularly. Avoid direct sunlight and don’t place them near fresh fruit.

The average height of a sunflower is 6-10ft and the world’s tallest sunflower, according to the Guinness Book of Records, was measured at 30ft 1in, grown by Hans-Peter Schiffer in Germany in 2014.

Top five best selling flowers of the summer, which are all UK grown, include Peonies, Scented Stocks, Alliums, Sunflowers and Agapanthus.
