Dehumidifiers and heated airers the ‘new air fryers’ as shoppers save on bills this winter

Customers turning to energy saving hacks to save money on bills.

  • John Lewis sees increase in sales of heated clothes airers by almost 50%
  • Dehumidifier sales triple, as customers look at ways to cut back on heating bills
  • Portable heaters, heated blankets and throws are also on the rise

As the colder weather begins to bite, people are turning to energy saving hacks to help save money and on their heating bills.

According to John Lewis, sales of dehumidifiers, heated clothes airers, portable heaters and heated blankets and throws are all on the rise.

Sales of heated airers - with a 300w option cost approximately 11p to run, as a cheaper alternative to tumble drying - have risen by almost 50%  compared to last year. Meanwhile dehumidifier sales have tripled, as customers look for ways to reduce moisture and improve air quality.

Roshni Chauhan, an electrical buyer for John Lewis, said: “We’re seeing customers looking for savvy ways to manage their heating costs, with our range of energy-efficient products offering an ideal solution.

“We’re seeing heated clothes airers and dehumidifiers becoming the new air fryers. Both are great for helping dry laundry indoors, and cheaper to run than a traditional tumble dryer.”

The poster child of energy saving hacks, the air fryer remains popular with customers, now in its third-year of unbroken growth. Sales of air fryers  have nearly doubled  compared to last year alone, as customers continue to be drawn to a healthier and most cost effective way of cooking.

Elsewhere, sales of heated blankets last week were up by a third compared to the same time last year, while traditional fur throw sales have increased by +91% compared to this time last year. A bestseller from the range includes the John Lewis Faux Fur Throw - as customers prepare for the cosy winter nights.

As well as turning to electricals, our customers are looking to wrap up with warmer clothing, as sales of cashmere are on the rise - having recently seen an increase in sales by 10% compared to the previous year.

In particular, sales of our cashmere roll necks have lifted, showing the appetite from our customers for snugglier fits.
