- Sunions, the tearless onions, make an early and exclusive return to Waitrose
- Perfect for those with sensitive eyes
- Sunions will be available from 6th December
Following their immense popularity earlier in the year, and in time for the festive period, Sunions® are making an early and exclusive return to Waitrose, ensuring Christmas cooking can be tearless!
Sunions®* are the first tearless and sweet onion variety, and are perfect for those who may have sensitive eyes or are getting the little ones involved in cooking the Christmas dinner this year.
Paul Bidwell, Waitrose onion buyer, said: “I may be biased, but in my opi-onion Sunions® make a very a-peeling addition to this year’s shopping list. The only tears that should be shed at Christmas are those of joy, not tears from cutting vegetables, and we’re delighted that we will be welcoming this onion variety back into our shops next month.”
Top tips from Waitrose chefs on using Sunions
Paul Gamble, Waitrose Senior Development Chef, said: “Sunions® are great for making a caramelised onion chutney for a Festive cheeseboard. Simply sweat the onion down in butter, add muscovado sugar and red wine vinegar, cook for 20 minutes and finish the chutney with Sherry or Port for a delicious flavour. They also work wonderfully in a French onion soup with a melted Gruyere cheese crouton - ideal for a cold winter's day!”
Zoe Simons, Waitrose Senior Development Chef: “With Sunions® you get a really lovely sweet flavour, similar to a shallot. This makes it great for things such as onion tarte tatin, or for making your own onion marmalade with a hint of whisky - the perfect homemade Christmas gift.”
