Waitrose today details a number of initiatives it has launched to support its most vulnerable suppliers during the COVID-19 pandemic.
As well as supporting British producers and farmers, the supermarket is helping the most vulnerable communities in developing countries that supply food and other products through the Waitrose Foundation.
Among its initiatives, Waitrose will be providing:
Rupert Thomas, Director of Food & Grocery at Waitrose, commented: “The John Lewis Partnership was founded on the principle that we have a responsibility to others and that we must treat people fairly, which extends to our Partners, customers, suppliers and the communities that we trade with, including those outside of the UK.
“This pandemic poses the greatest humanitarian and economic threat of our generation and, whilst we face many difficult decisions, as a collective industry we must continue to look at ways we can help to protect people and their livelihoods during this unprecedented time. The measures we have put in place are just the start and we will continue to do everything we can to provide support to our suppliers and the people who form part of them, particularly those that are most vulnerable.”
*The majority of Waitrose lamb is also British sourced, with all Waitrose fresh and frozen lamb to be 100% British sourced by next summer.
**For instance, where products have been reduced across our food service counters, we have ensured that those most vulnerable suppliers that rely on our business have their products included in other areas of our shops (for example, in pre-pack and on shelf).
***Waitrose’s decision to take on this additional stock has already helped support suppliers and reduce wastage, with Easter weekend sales this year generating a 102% year on year increase. It is also helping to encourage more customers to get into their gardens, with gardening widely celebrated by the RHS as a great way to support mental and physical well being.
****Waitrose has also been a long supporter of Farming Community Network, having sponsored a series of mental health talks in agriculture in 2019.
The John Lewis Partnership owns and operates two of Britain's best-loved retail brands - John Lewis & Partners and Waitrose & Partners. Started as a radical idea nearly a century ago, the Partnership is the largest employee-owned business in the UK and amongst the largest in the world, with over 80,000 employees who are all Partners in the business. John Lewis & Partners operates 50 shops across the UK (36 department stores, 12 John Lewis at home and shops at St Pancras International and Heathrow Terminal 2) as well as johnlewis.com. Waitrose & Partners has 338 shops in England, Scotland, Wales and the Channel Islands, including 61 convenience branches, and another 27 shops at Welcome Break locations. Waitrose & Partners exports products to more than 50 countries worldwide and has nine shops which operate under licence in the Middle East. The retailer's omnichannel business includes the online grocery service, Waitrose.com, as well as specialist online shops including waitrosecellar.com for wine and waitroseflorist.com for plants and flowers.
