'As expected, sales excluding fuel were 10.1% lower than last year, distorted by the later fall of Easter, which meant that there were six days of trading (due to the closure of many shops on Easter Sunday) compared to a full week last year.
It was a sparkling week for spring cleaning, with all household cleaning products up, including washing up and laundry products. Sales of eco cleaning and laundry products performed particularly well. Bakery also had a boost with an increase in sales of both pancakes and brioche.
Last week saw the launch of our new Scrumptious Summer range - the largest ever summer launch from Waitrose & Partners. The range with 150 new products (200 in total) celebrates treasured recipes and old foodie favourites such as rhubarb and custard, coronation chicken, cheese and pickle, pink lemonade and raspberry trifle.
The latest Beautifully Simple campaign also arrived to inspire customers to cook tasty, everyday meals with a small number of fresh ingredients. The no-fuss recipes and ingredients, which are merchandised together in shops to make it easier for shoppers, are supported by new TV adverts. The first ad features Beautifully Simple chicken with mango & quinoa.'
