Weekly sales figures to 25 January 2020

Partnership trading results for last week (to 25 January) published on Tuesday 28 January 2020.

For a number of years we have provided detailed weekly sales figures and commentary externally on the John Lewis Partnership website. From the start of our new financial year, which began on the 26 January 2020, we will no longer publish externally this information on our website. The Future Partnership strategy means we are now operating as one business and are therefore moving to a new financial reporting structure. We will however, continue to disclose information on our trading through the publication of our full and half year results and our Annual Report & Accounts. Further details can be found here.

'Total sales excluding fuel were down 1.6% compared to the same week last year. Many shoppers were still taking part in Veganuary and 'Dry January', with sales of vegan and vegetarian food, and low and no-alcohol drinks, proving particularly popular.

Customers were also sprucing up their homes and gardens with horticulture sales up 17% and cut flowers up 3%.

Last week, Waitrose.com won The Grocer's Online 33. Their mystery shopper found our website easy to navigate, delivery time slots clearly laid out and our driver friendly.'

'Total sales were down 2.5% as Clearance came to an end and competitor promotions impacted Home sales.

Fashion sales were up 0.4%. Market changes drove strong sales of nursery products sending Childrenswear, Nursery and Haberdashery sales up 4.8%. Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure sales were up 1.4% due to us price matching a competitor promotion on beauty products.

Home sales were down 9.3% as the end of our Clearance sale coincided with a number of competitors running promotions.  However, we saw strong sales of new Spring Summer ranges which we began to introduce in shops and online at the end of last week.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 1.1% due to customers continuing to buy new computers and tablets as a result of Windows 7 reaching its End of Life.'
