'Total sales excluding fuel were down 0.8% compared to the same week last year, with comparisons distorted by the earlier fall of Easter last year.

Sales of soft fruit and salads increased by 18% and 6% respectively, as the country enjoyed the spring weather. The sunshine also meant that beers and mixers had a strong week along with sales of ice cream, which were up 12%.

The popularity of the vegan and vegetarian range at Waitrose & Partners continues, as sales rose by 68% last week.

Fun Easter confectionery products that aren't quite as they seem, including the much-loved Avocado Egg and the Heston from Waitrose Chocolate Scotch Egg, are still proving extremely popular with shoppers.'

'Total sales for the week were down 8.9% as we annualised a week of promotions in the run up to Easter last year.

Fashion sales were down 1.3% on the same week last year, due to the Easter holidays starting later this year. However, sales of own brand swimwear were up 19% compared to last year, following the launch of our new John Lewis & Partners swimwear collection.

Home sales were down 11.3% but the warmer weather saw sales of outdoor living products up 8% on the same week last year.  

Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 14.7%, as the same week last year saw new product launches from Apple.'
