Total sales excluding fuel were up 7.5% compared to the same week last year with the trading week boosted by the additional day of sales in the run-up to New Year’s Eve.

Customers were in celebratory mood as Champagne and sparkling wines sales grew by 48% and 27% respectively on last year. Spirit sales were strong with liqueurs up 45%, imported whiskey up 38%, Tequila up 37%, Cognac up 36%, vermouth up 34% and gins up by more than 31%. Party food sales were also up 86%.

Last week, we launched our vegan fish ‘less’ fingers, which are already proving popular with customers, helping sales of our vegan and vegetarian ranges increase by 110%.

Total sales for the week were up 11.2% on last year in what was the first full week of Clearance.

Fashion sales were up 20.4%. Menswear had the biggest increase on last year with sales up 34.3% on last year.  Womenswear and Women’s Accessories were also up 19.7% and 24.3% respectively.

Home sales were up 1.7%.  Gifts, Cook and Dine continued to perform well with sales up 11.3%. Cookshop and Tabletop also had strong sales driven by standout Special Buy lines.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were up 11.7%. Communications Technology products had a very strong week with sales up 35.2% and television sales were up 14%.
