'Total sales excluding fuel were 2.7% lower than the same week last year, as the country continued to see mixed weather.

Sales of wine were up, with English and Welsh wine proving particularly popular with our customers. Champagne also had a sparkling week with sales up 20%, and pizza and pasta sales increased as shoppers looked for convenient cooking options.

Last week we announced that we'll be extending our Waitrose Unpacked test in Botley Road, Oxford, following an overwhelmingly positive response from customers. The concept tests customer appetite for a series of ideas designed to reduce packaging.

We'll now be introducing elements of the concept into three more shops by the end of the year, which will help us find out more about customers' willingness to change their shopping habits as well as understanding its commercial viability. '

'Total sales for the week were down 2.7 % on the same week last year.

Fashion sales were up 5.8%, driven by sales of Womenswear which were up 21.7% and Womens Accessories which were up 8.3%.  We also saw customers buying new season items with Autumn Winter Womenswear up 5%.

Home sales were down 7.1%, however, customers were refreshing their homes with decorative touches as we saw rugs up 17%, mirrors up 4% and art up 6%.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 6.6% as we competed with a strong week of Environmental Care product sales including fans and air purifiers alongside last week’s cooler weather.'
