'Total sales excluding fuel were down 0.3% compared to the same week last year, but the bank holiday weekend and warm weather helped drive strong sales growth in a number of categories.

Spirits had en excellent week with white rum up by almost 33% , tequila up by more than 26 per cent and malt whisky up by more than 19%. Sales of ale were up by 20% and cider sales were up by 25%.

Elsewhere, customers were buying foods more traditionally associated with barbecues and al fresco dining. Burgers and steaks were up 73% and 11% respectively, seafood and pre-packed fish sales increased by 7%, while salads were up 14% and sales from our Food to Go range were up 16%.  

This week will see us extend our 'Waitrose Unpacked' test when we introduce the concept at our Cheltenham shop on Friday. lt will have a dedicated refillable zone, including dispensers for dried products, frozen ‘pick and mix’, coffee, wine and beer refills, as well as detergent and washing up liquid refillables.'

'Total sales were down 7.2% on the same week last year as warm weather over the bank holiday weekend impacted trade.

Fashion sales were down 5.8%, however schoolwear sales picked up towards the end of the week as parents prepared for the start of a new school term. 

Home sales were down 14.0% but the warm temperatures saw sales of BBQs up 40% and Outdoor Furniture was up 20% as customers continued to make the most of their outdoor areas.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 2.8%, however sales of Large Electricals were up 8.6%, driven by cooking which saw sales up 29%.
