Weekly trading update: Another online record week
Following hot on the heels of last week's record-breaking Black Friday, this week delivered another record week for johnlewis.com. The online arm of our business saw a year-on-year increase of 22 per cent and a second week where the site has taken over a third of overall trade. Total sales across John Lewis reached £144.5m, up 1.8 per cent on last year and 17 per cent compared with two years ago. The week-on-week comparison at -1.7 per cent reflected just how significant Black Friday has become in the UK.
The week started with Cyber Sunday marking one of the busiest days of the year for johnlewis.com and setting a new record for the business overall as our biggest ever Sunday. Traffic to the site was up 29 per cent compared with the same day last year. As expected, visits to the site spiked at 8pm with peak sales following shortly after at 9pm. In contrast to Black Friday which saw electricals rocketing to the top of the list, popular products included many Christmas essentials such as chocolate coins, baubles and gift wrap. Mobile and tablet users accounted for just over 50 per cent of traffic to the site on Sunday, confirming the idea that consumers are increasingly turning to mobile to shop.
Mega Monday saw a further spike in orders between 9 and 10pm, contributing to a week where we picked, packed and delivered in excess of 500,000 customer orders across the network, nearly five times a normal week's activity. We also loaded 200 trailers a day to replenish our branches. Click & Collect continues to grow as customers opt for convenience, and Monday saw this delivery option up by 58 per cent on last year, and Collect Plus orders up 88 per cent on the previous week.
Customers searching for the perfect party look across clothing and beauty, from handbags and shape wear to nail polish, led to an increase in our fashion business of 4.9 per cent. Fashion was further boosted by strong trade in Christmas jumpers ahead of Save the Children's Christmas Jumper Day on 13 December. Home sales were driven by furniture, Christmas decorations and gifts, with strong sales of dining furniture and gift food backed up by our best-ever week for throws and cushions. In electricals and home technology, tablets continue to be the top sellers, with Wednesday seeing us exclusively launch the brand new Nokia Lumia 2520, Nokia's first foray into the tablet market.
David Barford, director of selling, John Lewis, said: 'With online sales setting a new high, records have been falling for a number of days but none of this would be possible without a stellar distribution operation or the sophisticated IT support that go hand in hand with the front of house service we offer instore and from our call centres.
'It's clear that both gift buying for others and treats for themselves are top of mind for our customers. At John Lewis we have revealed the winner of our 'Reworked' competition chosen by a panel of judges led by Keane, which will see Matthew Fearon from Leicester record a version of the soundtrack to our Christmas TV advert, 'Somewhere Only We Know', in a studio with producer Paul Beard. The track will be played out on Christmas Day, giving Matthew a Christmas he will never forget.'
