Weekly trading update
We achieved sales in excess of £100m last week for the first time this year, the earliest week we have ever delivered this, thanks in part to the onset of some colder weather.
Boots and slippers have proved particularly popular, along with hot water bottles, Hear Muffs and tumble dryers. Meanwhile, Barbour was the stand-out performer in fashion and sales of outerwear and knitwear helped to deliver an overall 29.8 per cent increase in childrenswear sales on last year.
There are signs that customers are beginning to prepare their homes for Christmas with sales of mattresses up on last year. Our express seven day curtain gallery has seen strong sales and folding chairs, napkins, coffee machines and towels have performed well - all indications that customers are getting ready to host guests over the festive season. Shoppers are also keen to purchase alternatives to the chocolate advent calendar, with make-your-own and Lego versions proving popular as December gets closer.
Johnlewis.com turned in another impressive performance, up 23.7 per cent on last year and online share achieved 31 per cent.
In electricals, iPads continue to do well following the launch of our three-year guarantee across all iPads which runs until the 28 November. Demand from our customers for larger screen size TVs continues to grow apace with sales of 46" TVs particularly strong.
Andrew Murphy, retail director, John Lewis said: 'We're delighted to have achieved such a strong uplift in sales and it's clear that as customers start to plan for Christmas, John Lewis is their destination of choice. All directorates have put in an impressive performance and the online share result is a great testament to the strength of our omnichannel model. In our shops, 11 branches put on double digit increases on last year, with the addition of fashion to High Wycombe continuing to delight customers. Both Oxford Street and Peter Jones delivered solid performances, showing Christmas has really arrived in the capital. The launch of our advert has resulted in a real festive buzz - Lily Allen is currently No.2 in the iTunes chart and we have brought the story of the bear and the hare to life for customers by installing caves in eleven of our shops so that children can have their photograph taken with cut outs of the advert's stars. As we approach Christmas we've never been clearer on the need to provide the excellent service and expert advice that we're known for and we recognise the crucial role we play in continuing to ensure that our customers have an enjoyable and hassle-free experience, however they choose to shop with us.'
