Weekly trading update

This week has seen a solid performance of £91.0m, 7.1 per cent up on last year. Online growth continued its strong rate and was up 23.1 per cent. The previous week's half term figures and iPad Air launch proved hard to beat and we came in a fraction behind that period at -0.7 per cent. With the comparison to two years ago at plus 19.3 per cent, we are performing well against previous years' trade.

The story of this week has been the launch of our Christmas TV advert featuring the Bear and the Hare, which was shown on our social media channels on Friday and in a stand-alone ad break during Saturday's X Factor - a first for the programme. The reaction from customers to our advert continues to build on previous years. It is the most popular UK video on YouTube with 2.6m hits, taking 24 hours to reach 1m views against the three days it took last year's ad to reach the same point. Trending both in the UK and worldwide on Twitter within minutes of launching, the film has had 133,170 shares on social media according to the Unruly Viral Video chart. On Saturday evening when the ad showed on TV for the first time, we saw 35,000 mentions on Twitter in a three hour period. Lily Allen's cover of Keane's 'Somewhere only we know' and our 'The bear who had never seen Christmas' book are both available to download now, and the book along with other Bear and Hare products are available now in our shops.

In other trade, fashion sales have been boosted as temperatures fell and pent-up demand drove sales. Womenswear was up 6.3 per cent year-on-year, menswear up 6.8 per cent and childrenswear an impressive 16.1 per cent. Cashmere has been a top seller across womenswear in particular, along with accessories such as leather gloves.

Andy Street, managing director of John Lewis, said: 'We have seen an overwhelming response from the British public to our TV advert. I don't think anyone could have anticipated the reaction we've had, and while we're surprised by the interest in the ad, we are pleased that our customers have responded in such a positive way.

'In terms of trade, the cooler weather has resulted in pleasing results for our fashion assortments as people start to buy for the winter season, which we hope to see build through November. In technology, the iPad Air continues to be a bestseller, and together with a strong performance from televisions, the signs are pointing to us having a tech Christmas again this year.'
