John Lewis Partnership invests £3 million in new hotel for Partners

Friday 4 April 2008

John Lewis Partnership has today announced a £3 million investment in the purchase and refurbishment of Bala Lake Hotel in Bala, North Wales. The property will become the fifth Partnership-run holiday club, offering subsidised holidays for the 69,000 people who work for the John Lewis Partnership, known as Partners. Bala Lake Hotel is the first new facility in 30 years, aimed at Partners and their families seeking a more active holiday.

Due to open in December 2008, the 24-room hotel at Bala is expected to create 18 permanent jobs on site, and will bring more than 5,000 visitors to the Bala Lake area every year.

The hotel was chosen for its access to Bala Lake, as well as its extensive grounds and woodland area. Further plans for the site include a revamp of the golf course into a five-hole 'pitch and putt' course, the creation of nature trails, and using part of the forest behind the hotel for cyber tag. There are plans to link up with local businesses that provide leisure services and activities to offer discounted packages for visitors.

Lawrence Chapman, General Manager, Residential Clubs and Leisure Activities says:

'We're delighted to announce the purchase of Bala Lake Hotel. Partners will now benefit from a choice of five subsidised hotels located across the UK. Bala is a fantastic location offering both stunning views and a great range of outdoor activities. We hope it will prove particularly popular with Partners seeking more active breaks and families with young teenagers. We're also delighted that the hotel will bring new job opportunities and a steady stream of visitors to the Bala Lake area throughout the year.'

The John Lewis Partnership aims to ensure that Partners have a healthy work-life balance, spending nearly £11 million annually on providing leisure activities and running its subsidised holiday centres. The Partnership owns four existing holiday clubs: the Odney Club near Cookham in Berkshire; Brownsea Castle; Ambleside Park in the Lake District; and Leckford Estate in Hampshire.
