John Spedan Lewis, who founded the Partnership, wanted Partners to have access to a lifestyle that perhaps they wouldn't have been able to enjoy in another company. As a result, he encouraged Partners to set up subsidised clubs and societies where they could paint, create, sail and play golf.
Now Partners can take part in a range of activities from abseiling and climbing, football and gliding to racquet sports, riding, skiing, surfing and swimming. The Sailing Club, for example, is one of the biggest, and many members recently sailed all five Partnership yachts – which are based near the Solent in Hampshire – in memory of its former Commodore, Robert Fraser (see Now, Voyager).
For the cultured, there are drama, photography, music and art clubs where Partners can develop their talents. In fact, Partners have found or rediscovered cultural leanings – and made some friends along the way.
