Sales for the week excluding fuel were 3.1% higher than last year.

With Christmas now firmly in sight customers have been stocking up for the big day in our shops and online. This ​included our range of wines, with sales 15% ahead of last year​, and mixers and fizzy drinks, which were up by 15% and 8% respectively.

According to our consumer research this weekend (9/10 December) ​was the most popular to decorate the Christmas tree. Our sales for the week ​reflected this, at 14% ahead of last year.

Shoppers also stocked up on our festive one day only special offers, including half price Aberdeen Angus sirloin and rump joints and two Bredon Champagne for £30.

Total sales for the week were £151.9, up 0.1% on the same week last year.

Electricals and home technology was up 1.4% on last year. Mobile had a strong week, up 47% on last year, as the iPhone 10 continues to perform well. With the onset of cold and wet weather, heating products were up 23% and coffee machines were also in demand, up 40% on this week last year.

Fashion sales were up 0.5%. Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure performed well in the run up to Christmas, up 3.6%, with beauty sales in particular up 7.8%. Customers also reacted to the changing weather with cold weather gear up 5% on last year and a new record for cashmere in Womenswear, up 24%.

Home sales were down 1.4% on last year, however Cookshop saw sales increase 9% due to promotions and filled bed linen continued to perform well, with 13.5 tog duvets up 9.2%.
