Total sales excluding fuel were up by 2.1% on last year.

Sales of vegetarian food increased by 24% as Waitrose unveiled its biggest ever range of meat-free foods with an additional 30 new vegetarian dishes. With strong sales in the first week, the range includes an exclusive co-branded initiative between Waitrose and The Vegetarian Butcher, a food producer specialising in meat substitutes.

It was also another sparkling week for wine, up by 13% overall, with fizz up by 31%. The new Waitrose Blueprint wines, a range of 38 mid tier wines crafted to reflect the world's classic regions and styles, also saw particularly strong sales, with Pinot Noir and Sauvignon Blanc being the most popular.

Shoppers have also been counting down to Christmas as sales of advent calendars increased by 21%.

Total sales for the week were £98.7m, down 4.0% on the same week last year.

Fashion sales were down 1.9% due to unseasonably warm weather in many parts of the country and a competitor promotion being run on fewer fashion and beauty products than last year.

Home sales were down 2.0% primarily due to fewer promotions but lighting sales and Cookshop were positively impacted with sales up 20.5% and 4.1% respectively. Furniture sales also grew +1.9% and Halloween products were up 19%.

Electrical and Home Technology sales were down 7.0%. Smart Home sales grew but there was lower demand for smartphones as customers await the new iPhone X, which goes on sale this Friday.
