Total sales excluding fuel were up 3.2% on last year helped by our one-day-only half-price promotion on all boxed chocolates on Friday and all service counter cheese on Saturday as well as a strong performance in wines, beers and spirits.

Wine sales were up by more than 8% with Argentinian and German wines seeing the largest increases in sales compared to the same week last year, up 89% and 50%, respectively.

Beer sales were up by 9% and spirit sales continue to grow, too, with tequila up by more than 23%, gin up by 17% and rum up by 18%, while cognac sales were up by more than 40%.

Elsewhere, Christmas meat orders increased by 11%, including turkey orders, which were up by 9%, as customers continued their preparation for the festive season.

Total sales for the week were £177.9m, up 3.4% on the same week last year.

Electricals and home technology sales were up 7.1%, driven by high demand in gaming and wearable technology. Mobile sales were also up as demand for iPhone X and iPhone 8 continues.

Fashion sales were up 1.7% with Beauty, Wellbeing and Leisure up 5.0% and womenswear up 4.6% on last year.  As colder weather sets in, John Lewis womenswear cashmere had record sales, up 24%.

Home sales were up 0.4%. Customers preparing for Christmas guests bought new bed linen. There was also a spike in shoppers buying games ahead of the festive period, with sales of puzzles up 33.9% and board games up 19.5% on last year.
