Total sales excluding fuel were the same as last year despite snow affecting most of the country during the first half of the week. The success of one-day-only half-price promotions continued, which this time focused on party food and desserts.

Magnums of Champagne and Prosecco had a sparkling week as customers entertained in the run-up to Christmas, including sales of San Leo Prosecco up 39%. Panettone sales were also up 34% as tastings of Heston's showstopping Black Forest Panettone from Waitrose took place in branches.

Freezing temperatures also led to strong sales of hearty food, with pie sales up 12% and soup up 12%. Customers also opted for convenience during a busy pre-Christmas week as ready meal sales increased 7%.

Total sales for the week were £171.4m, down 0.6% on the same week last year as adverse weather and heavy snow across the country saw fewer people head outside to shop - impacting all categories.  However, trade picked up towards the end of the week.

While Fashion sales were down 1.0% on last year, own brand (+7.6%) also had a strong week while cashmere (+31%) and men's knitwear saw record weeks.

Home sales were down 2.2% on last year but, similarly to Fashion, sales picked up as the week progressed particularly in Christmas and Gift Food.  The cold weather continued to drive sales in bedding and heating which were up 7.6% and 281% respectively.

Electricals and home technology was up 1.5%, driven by sales in Smart Home.  Promotions from Google and Amazon proved popular, as did the Star Wars merchandise which launched last week.
