FAQs about the Partnership
The John Lewis Partnership's reputation is founded on the uniqueness of our ownership structure and our commercial success. Our purpose is 'the happiness of all our members, through their worthwhile, satisfying employment in a successful business', with success measured on our ability to sustain and enhance our position both as an outstanding retailer and as a thriving example of employee ownership. With this in mind, our strategy is based on three interdependent objectives Partners, customers and profit.
The John Lewis Partnership head office is in London near Victoria Station.
Our strategy is underpinned by three Aims:
- Increase advantage of Partners
- Realise market potential
- Grow efficiently.
They are designed to make us bolder, clearer, and more confident that our Partnership approach is a better way of doing business. Delivering on our Aims ensures that, as our business grows, we respond better to new demands and continue to make the most of our co-ownership model. Underneath all our activities are the Partnership's ethical principles and our commitment to do business in a fair, sustainable way.
We are governed by our written Constitution which provides a framework establishing the Partnership's principles and the way in which it should operate. Although the Constitution has been revised and refreshed over the years, it retains a direct connection with the fundamental principles established in 1929. At the heart of the Constitution, Principle 1 sets out the Partnership's ultimate purpose. This compelling statement on the responsibility of co-ownership is what differentiates the Partnership from other corporate bodies.
The John Lewis Partnership has a constitution for both historical and forward looking reasons. Our founder John Spedan Lewis wanted to leave clear guidelines for his successors so that the values which had motivated him would not be eroded with the passage of time. The Constitution of the John Lewis Partnership was created to establish a business that is co-owned by its employees, the Partners.
Copies of our Annual Reports are available in three formats - interactive, PDF, text only - from this site.
The governance system of the Partnership was created by our founder, John Spedan Lewis and is set out in the Company's Constitution. Our structure gives our management the freedom to be entrepreneurial and competitive in the way they run the business for long-term success, while giving the company's owners, the Partners, the rights and responsibilities of ownership through active involvement in the business.
It is not possible to purchase shares in the John Lewis Partnership. The Partners (permanent staff) are the owners of the business and share in the benefits and profits.
The John Spedan Lewis story demonstrates how our founders ambitious vision of co-ownership has resulted in a Partnership of over 90,000 Partners sharing in the benefits and profits of a business that puts them first. All Partners have a say in how we run the business through our democratic bodies in the form of a set of councils and committees that feed Partners opinions back to the Partnership Council, the Partnership Board and the Chairman.
