Key Performance Data

The direction and trend in our quantitative Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) performance are measured against a set of key performance indicators which cover all the major areas of CSR (environment, community, employees and customers, products and suppliers). This section outlines our year-on-year performance against these indicators.

Where available and relevant, data is provided for the last three years.

General notes to the tables are included at the bottom of this page. Subject specific notes are included within each section.

Notes

1 Includes emissions resulting from UK owned and operated parts of the business and significant emissions from third party operated distribution sites that are solely operated for Waitrose. Emissions have been calculated using Defra-DECC 2010 emission factors, with the exception of those for waste and waste collections, Pure Plant Oil being used on a trial basis in a small number of Waitrose distribution vehicles, certain refrigerants, and some emissions sources associated with our Leckford farm. 2010-11 is the base year for our new carbon target. We have included emissions related to water supply, water treatment and other fuels used in our buildings for the first time in 2010/11. Our annual reporting period runs from 1st February - 31st January the following year, in line with our business' financial (trading) year.

2 For an explanation of scope 1, 2 and 3 and our boundary of inclusion see page 14 of our 2011 CSR report.

3 Energy associated with all shops, offices and owned and operated distribution centres has been included. For Waitrose energy for Leckford has also be included. Energy used at outsourced distribution centres is not included.

4 The prolonged cold weather in winter 2010 impacted shop energy efficiency through increased heating usage.

Notes

5 2008-09 and 2009-10 data for transport related CO2e emissions per £m sales was updated in 2010 to a update applied emissions factors.

6 Waitrose has a number of distribution centres that are operated on our behalf by contractors.

Notes

Data relates to operational trade waste only.

8 John Lewis data for 2009-10 and Waitrose data for 2008-09 and 2009-10 has been recalculated and waste treated at energy from waste facilities is not reported separately.

9 In 2010-11, a new general waste contractor was used. As a result Waitrose now receives tonnage figures for more of its waste and has a greater understanding of the end destinations for mixed waste materials. In addition, the majority of mixed waste previously being landfilled is now either being incinerated to generate energy or being mechanically separated for recycling.

Notes

10 As a result of installing additional water meters in late 2009-10 we now have more accurate water data for our shops. Due to uncertainties in the accuracy of data we have not reported consumption and efficiency data for 2009-10. Our new additional meters provide real-time water consumption information, enabling us to make and measure improvements and set a new water efficiency improvement target.
