Fashion leads the way as good form continues

The third week of the new trading half saw the continuation of our good form. We beat last year's sales by 11 per cent.

Twenty one shops were up on last year's mark and eight went one step further and exceeded the level of trade achieved in 2008. These top-performing branches posted rounded results right across the shop, including solid increases in Electricals while also out-performing their peers in Fashion and Home.

Leicester led the way with a resounding 18 per cent increase on last year and strong sales in Home assortments. Bluewater had a move on of 19 per cent, with fashion to the fore. Kingston and Cambridge matched each other with a pair of 13 per cent advances and saw equally strong activity within Fashion and Home assortments.

Johnlewis.com continued to grow trade at a rapid rate, building by a quarter on last year's sales. Massive growth continues in Fashion online, up 93 per cent on last year, with womenswear, accessories and beauty being the main drivers of this pleasing success.

Looking across our business as a whole Fashions lead the way with a 15 per cent increase, closely followed by Home categories on 14 per cent. Electrical & Home technology assortments experienced more mixed results: 1 per cent up on last year.

Within the range of bright results from the Fashion categories, it was adult clothing – both Menswear and Womenswear – that deserves special mention. The new suit ranges in men's formalwear clearly impressed customers and women's outerwear posted a particularly strong increase with some 'interesting' August weather. Meanwhile, within Home, the Furniture buying offices excelled, with the pick of their bunch a 94 per cent increase in Fitted furniture owing much to strong sales within fitted kitchens.

Catering, too, was not to be left out of the action – enthusiasm was evident in our customers' demand for food and refreshment last week and Catering Partners across the business handled this in their stride.

All in all an impressive week's trade with bank holiday ahead of us and some exciting Autumn/Winter product ranges providing freshness on the shop floor.
